FCAM: How to Help, Part One.Five

FCAM: How to Help, Part One.Five

{day 9} What if you’re not meant to foster? What if you’re not in a place to do it or just have no interest in it, but want to help some other way? WELCOME and THANK YOU. Over the last few years, I’ve been in conversations about what supporting foster families looks like, in very practical terms. The reality of foster care is that it takes a true village. You’ve got the joys and struggles of parenting in general, plus the foster aspects - lots of appointments, interactions with bio families, unknown beginnings and endings, myriad regulations, and people telling you what to do. I know “regular” parents need and receive help, and goshdarnit, so do we/ I. Here’s a quick list of a few ways you can help. These aren’t “nice to have” things. These are what makes fostering even a possibility for so many of us. These are what stands between kiddos sleeping on cots in a CPS office or babies staying weeks in the NICU only because they have nowhere to go. Tomorrow, I’ll give some places to check these avenues out in my stories!

1)BABYSITTING. far and away the greatest need. Foster parents typically can’t use the neighbor to babysit. All of mine have to be background checked, fingerprinted, and CPR/ 1st aid certified. Please, please pleasehelp us with this. I would not have even gone through training if I didn’t have an army of people already signing up to help in this way. Bonus- if you’re thinking about fostering, it’s a low key low commitment way to explore and get to know foster families!

2) Bringing stuff. Whether a meal or formula or homework kids left at school, offer to bring something. Kids w trauma (ie, all kids in foster care) thrive on schedules; the 9 pm Target run for a school costume or milk might throw them off for days. Seriously. Next time you run errands, maybe text a foster friend to see what you can pick up?

3) Service. If errands or babysitting aren’t in your wheelhouse, what about serving another way? Offer to wash their car or full it up with gas. Clean their house or pay for a housekeeper. ***
