FCAM: Mother's Day

{day 12} this beautiful boy is giggling and smiling and snuggling through an ear infection. I’m so glad to be with him today, and very aware of the people who love him and can’t be here with him. It’s almost #mothersday, and I’ll be holding tensions as many of us do. Unbridled joy and lighthearted celebration for some; grief and loss and unmet expectations for others. A day spent celebrating a role is tricky. What defines a mother? Can we celebrate everyone who loves and leads and nurtures? And can we also tend to the pain and loneliness and not enough-ness that tomorrow brings for many? I think we can.

Is there someone you can reach out to tomorrow, just to say - I love you and I see you today? Or can you reach out to tell your people what supporting you tomorrow looks like? I’ll tell you - texts or calls or emails just acknowledging me as a single non-technical-mother the last 10 or so years have been gold. There isn’t a Hallmark “big sister figure / fun aunt day,” or a “couldn’t be more single” day or “been trying to have a baby for 5 years” day or “I’m just as valuable without kids” day. There is just us, and how we show God’s love to each other day in and day out. I am so proud of and thankful for all of the amazing women in my life, and I am standing with all of you tomorrow, however it meets you.
